1st Amendment Art Show

1st Amendment Open Mic / Open Song / Open Canvas
Saturday April 20th, 2013

April 20th, 2013 (Torrington) - The Northwest chapter of the Connecticut American Civil Liberties Union is hosting an event at Artwell in downtown Torrington on Saturday, April 20, 6:00-9:00 – “Open mike, Open song, Open canvas.” This is an open invitation to people to come perform: read, sing, play an instrument, bring a painting or a drawing and share what  you believe comments, in some way, on the First Amendment. We hope to spark thought and comment   about the role and importance of art and the First Amendment*, as well as freedom of expression in community.

Prof. Norman Dorsen speaks to the NWCT Chapter

As part of the Northwest CT Chapter's Fall Lecture Series, Prof Norman Dorsen, Former President of the ACLU, spoke to us on "The Limits of Free Speech: An ACLU View".  The event was held on Sunday Sept. 30th at the North Cornwall Meeting House and was well attended, with over 80 people filling the room.

Professor Dorsen was the President of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1976 to 1991 and has argued many Supreme Court cases. He helped write the petitioner’s brief in Roe v. Wade and appeared amicus curiae in the Pentagon Papers case, the Gideon case and the Nixon Tapes cases. He is currently Counselor to the President of New York University as well as the Stokes Professor of Law at the NYU School of Law, where he has taught since 1961.

We'll be discussing and planning our Summer/Fall lecture series as well as our ArtShow that is scheduled to take place during the summer.

****Additionally, students from Torrington High School recently produced a film on hate speech and bullying in schools.  They attended the ACLU CT Symposium in Hartford, interviewed some of the participants, and included it in their film.  Come watch the screening with us!  See below for invite.****

Lastly, come bring your ideas at what kind of events you'd like to see the Chapter put on during the Summer/Fall.  All are welcome!  Bring ideas on what you think our ACLU Chapter should do!
